This is a positive news for the IT/ITES industry where the corporates are partnering with academics to bridge the skill gap and offer employability opportunities to individuals. The question still though is that how positive an impact will it have for a long term employability for these BPO diploma individuals and is a career in BPO an opportunity ? A number of the firms which are BPO firms will not exist in their current shape or form over the next five years. The term BPO I believe is going to be not part of the offerings for companies which exist five years from now as they will all be offering more than just BPO under a different packaging. Currently the BPO industry is also witnessing a transformation when it is dealing with a slowdown in the global economy, a maturing industry and trying to define itself into a new form.
It is encouraging to see the academics and corporates coming together but I still wonder if BPO skills should be part of an elective program you do for students rather than offer it as a core course and diploma. Do you also offer it to students who are past the ten + two system so that becomes their only post school education skills and will it sustain these individuals for a long term career option ?

Accenture and the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) today launched a Diploma Programme in BPO, which will be available to one million IGNOU students.
The programme, targeted at undergraduate and graduate students from Tier I to IV cities, is aimed at positioning BPO as a ‘formal’ career option and to help the country’s outsourcing industry.
Accenture said it will develop the course content and train teachers, and IGNOU would deliver the programme.
According to Nasscom president Som Mittal, “This initiative is very critical to sustain the BPO growth curve. This sector has potential to grow five fold to $50 billion by 2012, and skilled workforce is an integral part to achieve this goal”
He added that this course would be of immense assistance to access talent from the untapped labour pool.
The core curriculum for the one-year distance education programme is provided for communication and IT skills, specialising in various sectors according to industry needs.
Initially, the programme will include BPO services such as finance and accounting, insurance, human resources and customer contact services.
Those who have passed in 10+2 and along with the IGNOU certificate course in communications skills, are eligible to apply.
The course would cost around Rs 5000-7000.
