Croydon Council, the largest London borough by population,is extending its contract with Capgemini UK plc for the provision of IT services until 2013 as a key part of its programme of transformation which has already improved the quality of local services and delivered significant efficiencies.

The new contract extension means that for the next five years (2008-2013) Capgemini will be supporting all the Council’s IT and telecommunications infrastructure and networks, including some 4,000 desktop computers, and the Council’s key business applications including finance, procurement and customer service. Capgemini will also provide consultancy expertise to support the wider transformation of local services.

The total value of the services to be provided by Capgemini to Croydon over the five-year period is estimated at some £83 million.

The two organisations have been working in close collaboration on Croydon Council’s transformation programme since 2003 under a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract, and the extension to 2013 will make the contract one of the biggest and longest-running in UK local government. The Council, which was recently awarded the government’s highest four-star rating for its use of resources, has developed one of the largest and best performing contact centres in the country, and has achieved national recognition for its success in the take-up of its on-line services.

The Council says that extending its contract with Capgemini will enable its programme of service transformation to be further accelerated alongside significant investment in new technologies such as a new wireless network infrastructure, the upgrade of key business systems and hardware and a new Council-wide Geographic Information System. Croydon has already successfully rolled out full wireless technology to all of its elected Councillors which enables them to work from any location day or night.

Services under the new contract will be carried out on-site at the Council’s offices and at Capgemini centres in the UK, Europe and India.
