Sitel, a global business processing outsourcing corporation with offices in Oak Ridge, is laying off some of its 450 local employees. However, according to a company official, the layoffs are temporary.

“All of the layoffs that have occurred are considered to be temporary,” said Margaret Angell, Sitel’s marketing and public relations manager.

Forty employees who work at Sitel’s Oak Ridge location in Commerce Park have been affected by the layoffs, which will continue over the next week.
They were informed of this seven weeks ago,” Angell said. “We requested volunteers, and most all of those took voluntary time off.

“These short-term changes are part of Sitel’s normal business cycle,” according to information contained in a Monday afternoon e-mail.

When asked about the reasons behind the temporary downsizing, Angell declined to give specifics. However, she did say, “It’s not necessarily related to one particular client.”

She noted that “some clients are moving their business to different locations, but we also have two new clients who are bringing business into the Oak Ridge location.”

The 40 employees who were laid off in the last few weeks are expected to start working again next week.

“We have a target date of March 17 to bring them back and start new training,” Angell said.

According to its Web site, Sitel provides customer service care, technical support, sales programs, retention strategies, customer acquisition, back-office processing, and collections and receivables for its clients.

Sitel works with a wide variety of industries, including automotive, energy and utilities, health care, insurance, Internet service providers, travel and tourism. Formed by the merger of ClientLogic and SITEL in January 2007, Sitel employs an estimated 65,000 associates in 28 countries.

Angell declined to disclose the clients that Sitel services because of agreements with those companies.
