TCS interns to work on customer sites abroad

I wonder if the customers are ready for this and is TCS doing this because of a lack of hiring the right staff ? I am surprised if clients would have agreed to foot the bill of getting the interns onshore and paying for their training. Given the issues involved with onshore staff from offshore vendors – communication, sensitivity of information, customer interaction. TCS must have a strong training program in place to train the interns before they go to client sites.

Tata Consultancy Services Limited (TCS), Hyderabad, will send interns to take up onsite work for its customers overseas. It plans to begin this with the telecom sector.

“We are in the process of sending students, to a telecom customer organisation abroad, who will work onsite for six to eight months to better understand the client’s problems and address them before coming back to service the client from the offshore development centre in Hyderabad,” Rajanna, general manager, TCS Hyderabad, told mediapersons today. The company is working on the employment bond for this pilot project.

TCS had recruited 4,000 professionals in Hyderabad in 2007 and is looking at the same number this year too. Five per cent of its total intake comprises interns, and it plans to send a few of them abroad as part of the pilot project. The initiative will be replicated across all TCS centres in the country, he added.

On the company’s 75-acre development facility at Adibatla on the city outskirts, which is part of the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC)-promoted SEZ, Rajanna said the company was creating infrastructure for a 15,000-seat facility there.

“We intend to house 3,000 personnel by 2009, add another 5,000 by 2011 and the rest by 2013,” he said.
