If you are a BPO employee in Salt Lake Sector V, Kolkata, police have decided to watch you 24×7. This is not because any serial stalker is doing rounds of the IT hub, but police have stepped up security measures to ensure safer working atmosphere for the IT professionals, especially those working through the night. According to a senior police officer of the North 24-Parganas, a total of fifteen locations have been identified where surveillance cameras would be installed and its feed will be recorded and jointly monitored by police and Nabadiganta Industrial Township Authority (Nita). This would mean that Sector V would be the first industrial area in the country to have a round-the-clock surveillance. This concept of using surveillance cameras to reduce crime rate and track criminals has been used very effectively in the USA and UK. The police department is looking at increasing the staff strength of the uniformed men as well.
“We will deploy special officers not only trained in basic policing but also in behavioural aspect so that they can handle the young crowd that predominate the area,” said the senior officer. Nita would probably provide a patrol car to the police, for round-the-clock deployment. “We are speaking to a number of private companies which have establishments here to sponsor such a vehicle,” said an official of Nita. However, working professionals in Sector V, have mixed response for this new initiative by police. While some say that the move may be seen as an attempt to infringe on their privacy, others say that it may still not work because police won’t be able to maintain the system. “Though this can be of immense help if used sensitively, people should be made aware of these cameras, else it would seem like infringing upon their privacy,” said an IT professional. “Police have failed to curb rising incidents of crime in Sector V. I do not think 24×7 surveillance is going to bring that down,” said another IT professional.
